Non-union

A Non-union job in the voice-over industry refers to work performed without the protections, benefits, and standards established by labor unions, such as SAG-AFTRA. Non-union roles allow more flexibility in hiring, and often, clients and producers may opt for non-union jobs to avoid union regulations or for budgetary reasons. These roles provide more opportunities for new or independent voice actors, who may not be members of a union, to gain experience and build portfolios without the requirements union jobs often impose.

While non-union jobs can offer a wider range of work opportunities and may sometimes be more flexible, they lack the wage protections, residuals, and benefits (such as health insurance and pension contributions) associated with union jobs. For voice actors just starting out, non-union work is a common path, as it allows them to practice their craft, build a resume, and gain industry connections without needing union representation.

Non-union Work and Industry Standards

In the competitive world of voice acting, non-union work provides a stepping stone for many actors. For example, a new voice actor might land a role in a non-union commercial or a small animated production, gaining valuable experience and exposure. Non-union roles often pay a one-time fee, known as a “buy-out,” for the session, allowing the actor to retain freedom over their work. However, because these roles may not have the residuals associated with union work, actors need to carefully consider how non-union roles align with their career goals.

Producers and clients who choose non-union actors often do so for budget flexibility. Non-union work allows production teams to streamline their budgets while still accessing skilled voice talent. While these jobs may not always pay as highly as union roles, non-union work is often less complex to manage from an administrative standpoint, making it appealing to producers on a tight schedule.
